A World of Plants
Fall is a busy time in the Family Garden. Harvest the last of the season’s vegetables, smell herbs, and dig for worms. Help prepare the garden for the upcoming winter by sowing cover crops, planting flowering bulbs, making compost, and raking leaves. Each student pots up a plant to take home.

Kiku: The Art of the Japanese Chrysanthemum
Experience the Japanese art of kiku (chrysanthemum), the national flower of Japan, and crest of Japan’s Imperial family. In this tour, students will learn about the fascinating ancient tradition of growing kiku into exquisite shapes and dramatic forms as well as its rich symbolism in Japanese art, life, and culture.

Adventures for Plant Hunters
Students explore the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory using a colorful, fact-filled map to lead their journey through the rain forests, deserts, and aquatic environments in search of plants used as medicines, trees that produce chocolate, and roots that grow above ground. Throughout the journey, they discover ways people use plants around the world and investigate how plants adapt to survive extreme habitats.

Holiday Trains and Treats
During a self-guided visit to the Conservatory, students see model trains and trolleys as they move through the magical landscapes of historic New York State buildings. For a doubly exciting program, delve into the botany behind gingerbread, explore its plant origins, and taste a gingersnap during Gingerbread Adventures in the Adventure Garden.
